"Will Run for Beer"

Heyo!

Hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving weekend! Get ready for a big recap of mine.

Wednesday:
My weekend started off Wednesday night…after a 40 minute treadmill workout including Tabata intervals, incline walking, and jogging, and all I could think about doing was lying on my couch, cuddled up with some beers and American Horror Story. And that is what we did on the biggest bar night of the year. Soooo cool, right?

Coop and I continued our beer taste-testing with these guys:

Black Sheep’s Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale

This one was a little bitter for me…I think the aroma carried over into the taste, which made it taste more bitter than it actually was, maybe? Sweet at first sip, and then that bitter aftertaste. It was totally drinkable, don’t get me wrong, but probably my least favorite of the bunch. Exhibit A of buying a product due to the label. I’m a marketer’s dream.

Blue Point’s Toasted Lager

This one was tasted right after the Holy Grail Ale, and I liked it much better. Easy to drink and smooth, I loved the flavor of this one. The description on Blue Point’s site: “Copper in color, our most popular and unique brew is made from six different malts, including English Pale, Crystal, Munich, Carapils, Wheat, and Belgian Caravienna. Toasted Lager’s balanced flavor of malt and hops makes for easy drinking and the special lager yeast we use produces an exceptional, long-lasting smooth finish.”

Magic Hat’s hI.P.A (Fall I.P.A on Tour)

I like MH’s Encore (the Winter I.P.A on Tour) better, probably because it is a wheat I.P.A (and I LOVE wheat beers), but this one is great, too. Coop loves I.P.A’s and especially loved this one. Hoppy hopperoo. Love the artwork.

Thursday:
Thanksgiving in Baltimore was a great one, as usual. The food was out of this world, the wine was delicious, and the company was the best. Only picture I have of the food? My sister’s Oreo mousse that she stuffed her chocolate cupcakes with. Um, I imagine this is what a crack addiction is like. Oscar and I were eating this stuff by the spoon-and bowl?-ful, every time we opened the fridge and saw the huge container of it staring at us. Thanks for making a humungo batch of the mousse, little sister.

(Those may or may not be finger-dips you see in there…)

Friday:
On Friday, my dad and I went to the Flyers game to watch another amazing game. I have officially decided I want a Giroux Winter Classic jersey. I love lace-top jerseys!

(Source)

He was the Player of the Game….aaaand glad to see his Movember ‘stache is still in full force.

We went up to the Cadillac Grille during the first intermission/second period with my dad’s best friend, and Dad and I each enjoyed a Victory HopDevil while listening to live jazz and checking out great views of the city.

I have never been to the Grille during the day, and while I love the classy atmosphere mixed with the gorgeous city lights at night, it was cool to see it in daylight. Gorgeous day for November…I fear that this is the calm before the storm (aka East Coast Winter Hell).

One thing I love about Philly is how their sports complex houses three major stadiums…the Lincoln Financial Field (Eagles), Citizen’s Bank Park (Phillies), and the Wells Fargo Center (Flyers and Sixers) are all right there.

We enjoyed gazing at all the cars we will never be able to own, obviously the players’ parking lot.

While I avoided the crowds and took a much-needed yoga class with one of my favorite instructors and went to the hockey game on Black Friday, I did take advantage of the online sales….I got a sparkly dress for New Year’s Eve, a new Lululemon tank (no sale, but free shipping as always), and I have been eyeing a few cameras for some time now. I wanted something pretty compact; smaller than my DSLR, but better than my sand-riddled Nikon point-and-shoot. Since I am no professional and don’t remember much from my college photography class days, I settled on a Sony Nex-5. I had heard, and seen, good things, and decided it was a better value, and probably better camera, than the super-cute Nikon1 I had been lusting over. So Best Buy, thanks for the sweeeet deal on my new Nex-5 (with two lenses, a memory card, an external flash, AND a case).

Still learning the ins and outs of it, but I took it for a couple test runs this weekend, and I was pleased!

Saturday:
Saturday morning, I woke up and headed to the gym for another 2+ hour BodyCombat/BodyPump challenge. And the instructors put us to work! It got to the point where they had to open the gym doors and were taking bets on who would throw up first, including them, ha! It was super intense and I loved it, but I knew I would be sore after. And….I am. Hi, delayed onset muscle soreness.

Coop’s band had a show that night, so after picking up my new camera in Delaware (no tax….waddup!!!) I headed up to Philly. We got there early, posted at the bar, ordered the Crab Cheddar Mac and Cheese, and I had a local Yards Brawler (can you tell lots of beer was consumed this weekend? Sheesh…those “Will run for beer” shirts may be made for me) while we watched Stevie Wonder and Simon & Garfunkel live concerts on the TVs.

Biggest chunks of crab EVER! And lots of Old Bay

The show was over pretty early, so we were able to go out to meet up with some people from the shore house afterwards. Jolly’s Piano Bar and Locust Rendezvous, not sure you were quite ready for the House House. < the 2011 Avalon house nickname

Address blacked out…safety first!

We haven’t seen most of the crew since the summer, so it was great to see everyone! And we missed everyone that wasn’t there. It ended up being a later night than planned, but we had a great time, obviously. (Thanks for the pics, Mur!)

Oh, summer. <3

Sunday:
Started off the day with the best Buffalo Chicken ‘za in the world (since we got there too late last night and were still craving it in the morning). Breakfast of champions. I’m obsessed with Soho Pizza (another go-to spot of ours), and it was even nice enough to sit outside!

And my little surprise I mentioned last week?

Merry early Christmas, Coop.

After pizza, we took the subway to Broad Street for some tailgate action. My Philadelphia-living cohort is actually from New Hampshire and is a Patriots fan (the horror!!). I thought it would be a fun thing for us to do since the Pats don’t come here often and he had only seen them in action during a preseason game a few years ago. A little healthy competition, Him vs. Her….and yet of course, knowing my Eagles, I didn’t expect a big win (good thing…we didn’t get one). It was still a really fun game to go to, our seats were amazing, and I even enjoyed watching my fellow Arizona alum Gronk continue to kick ass and take names with Tom Brady.

We also got to meet up with a couple other Avalon friends at the game! Missed you guys!!!

Monday:
Anyone partaking in Cyber Monday today? Seems like all the sites started Black Friday early this year and run sales through today. I did get a couple BIC Bands today. I have been wanting to try them forEVER and finally bought the Gunmetal and Teal sparkly bands…one may be for a gift.  ;)

They apparently stay in place through everything, and my crazy floppy hair needs that for Combat, Zumba, yoga, running, etc. AND they are cute, AND they donate proceeds to a different charity every month. They are offering free shipping today and a special gift with a $50+ purchase, so if you are already a fan or have been wanting to try these babies like me, get ‘em now! Looks like a bunch of colors are back in stock.

Tonight I will be ordering my first round of Christmas cards and gift tags (did you notice the one up above?) and I will post the image of the 2011 card I have finished soon.

WOO, that was another loooong post. I give you props if you’re still with me here.

Have a good week! xoxox

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, happy Thanksgiving Eve!

(Source)

I am really excited for Thanksgiving; it just may be my favorite holiday….

It’s the official kick-off to the holiday season (for me, anyway, and I can finally allow myself to decorate, wrap, and listen to Christmas music to my little heart’s abandon), I get to see a bunch of family that I usually only see once a year (all of whom I am incredibly lucky and thankful for), Coop and Oscar are joining us this year and being introduced to even more family…oh yeah, and the drinking and eating, which comes in abundance.

Shenanigans always ensue…one year, my cousins discovered a little blue bottle of “Mad Dog” amongst all the liquor and wines, which the boys (including my dad) thought they should chug. Not after giving my grandma a shot first, of course.

It was her first shot ever. What?

Also can’t wait to see my cousins (two of whom are currently adorably preggers) who also happen to have the cutest kids ever. It is always a fun group.

I’m excited to recap my Boston mini-trip…great company, tons of walking and seeing all the ‘hoods, and soooo much delicious food. I want to do a two- or three-part recap once I get more (and better) pictures from my friends, but until then, here is a little preview of some fun things we did.

The food we ate was un. Real.

Hot Lobster Roll
Philly Cheesesteak Eggrolls and Fried Clams at Davio’s
Spinach,  Egg, Roasted Red Pepper & Fontina

Yet, I reenforced the fact that I just do not like goat cheese, try as I might.

Tastes musty….blech.

Want to see a 5′ girl next to a 7′ (+?) college basketball coach? Sure you do!

(Is that unreal or WHAT?)

Had a wonderful time at a beer fest with my fellow Dogfish Head lover.

Sah’ tea is AMAZING.
Offshore Nutbrown Ale…oh. My gosh.

And just seein’ the sights!

The verdict? It is easily the cleanest, most walkable city I have been to on the East Coast…absolutely gorgeous, tons of culture and great architecture, so many awesome restaurants…I can’t believe it took me this long to get up there! If it didn’t get so freakin’ cold, I could totally see myself moving there.

Speaking of great cities, I’m still learning and loving mine. I was really excited when I got this interview from Yelp in my inbox yesterday…Top Chef alum Jen Carroll, a Philly native, talks about her favorite places around town.

How cute is she?
(Source)

I love some of the places she talks about, and some I have yet to try. She mentions Race Street Cafe, our go-to spot.

(From their Facebook page)

I am loving exploring the city I grew up in a suburb of and yet never really got the chance to immerse myself in since I moved across the country for years. Plus, it makes it all the more fun having a really good lookin’ tour guide.

I am super sore after intense cardio, BodyPump, and BodyCombat this week. Going to start my long weekend off with a BodyPump class right after work and possibly try out some Tabata intervals…but don’t hold your breath on that one. I have a fabulous blister on my heel from walking around Boston all weekend, so those may hafta wait for a few days. I’m looking forward to some serious yoga on Friday, and another two-hour Pump/Combat challenge on Saturday. All in preparation for the holiday eats (no restrictions over here) and a day off on Sunday.

I have a fun little thing planned on that day….stay tuned ;)

  • Where are you having Thanksgiving? Hosting it yourself? Traveling somewhere? For as long as I can remember, we have traveled to Baltimore to my Aunt and Uncle’s house for a big ol’ family get-together.
  • Do you have any favorite spots in your city? We love Race Street Cafe in Old City…not just for the amazing food, but also their spectacular beer list. And the Bloody Marys, I’m in love…the place is a late-nighter or a bruncher’s dream.
  • Have you ever tried a Tabata interval workout?

Safe travels, and Happy Thanksgiving!
xoxoxoxo

I Think I’ll Go to Boston….

Hollaaa!

It’s finally the end of the work week. Wahooo!

The Friday Five

1.) What I’m Reading:

Put down the last book I was reading…for some reason, it was just taking me a while to get into it, so I started another book in the meantime before I revisit it.

The Rum Diary.

So far, loving this! And I am reading it way quicker. Can’t believe Hunter S. Thompson started this novel when he was just 22. Insane!

2.) What I’m Listening To:

Childish Gambino!

And Howard Best of the Week, as per usual. Chris Cornell and Chaz Bono!

3.) What I’m Watching:

Catching up on my gagillion shows, as always…and one I have failed to mention before here…I’m just loving New Girl. Girl crush!

(Source)

This episode….absolutely my fave so far. Hilarious.

4.) What I’m Eating:

This mornin’….Pumpkin Protein Oats. Plus my favorite Twinings Green Tea with Jasmine (and honey).

But I am way more excited for the meals I will be eating this weekend!!! :)

5.) What I’m Pinning:

Snickerdoodle Pumpkin Ice Cream Sandwiches…WHAAAAT.

(Source)

Also these trees. I LOVE driftwood.

(Source)

They remind me of my new candle holder from Anthropologie.

It’s nice to have a baby sister that works there. ;)

Oh yeah….and as for the hockey game last night….it was my two homes, head to head! Philly killed the tie with only 18 seconds left in a very uncharacteristic last-second win. SO exciting! Matt Read is pretttty phenomenal. Sorry ‘Zona….I love you, but Philly sports will always have my heart. <3

Crab Fries were obviously consumed.

Also, Giroux is rocking a serious Movember ‘stache. Gotta love that.

Any fun plans for the weekend? I am going on a mini-getaway to BOSTON for the first time ever (in case you didn’t realize that already from my “hints” and post title)!! We have so many things planned, and I cannot wait to recap it all! Any places I should try to hit up while I am there? SO EXCITED. :)

See ya next week, babes!

xoxoxo

Thrown-Off Workout Plans

(Not to be confused with the Kanye Workout Plan.)

Howdy howdy howdy.

How’s your week?

As usual, mine has been pretty jam packed.

Finally about 90% done this drawing I have been working on forever…I just cannot get the background right!!!!

I will finish it this week, and it will free up the first few days of next week to work on my Christmas cards. I hope to order them around Thanksgiving. Woo hoo! I am so pumped for Thanksgiving in Baltimore and Christmas in New Hampshire this year….it is going to be a fabulous holiday season for sure.

Thrown-Off Workout Plans

I have a lot of fun things coming up, and in my preparation (and a hair appointment Tuesday and a Flyers game tonight), I have had to miss the gym twice this week.

Does anyone else get an awful feeling when your workout routine is thrown off?

I set my alarm for 5:30am and then 6 this morning…but of course, I didn’t get out of bed until after 7 due to a husky licking my face and prancing around on my bed.

Oh. Good Morning.

I hate feeling guilty like this, but I have to remember that a few days won’t undo all the hard work I have put in. Just like my food philosophy (eat well most of the time…when you splurge, do it up big and be guilt-free…you’ll get back to it tomorrow, or Monday, anyway!), I think that applies to exercise, too. Work hard, play hard. I may or may not have a few crab fries tonight though. ;)

I am all for a rest day (or two) throughout the week, but I know with my impending weekend getaway tomorrow, I probably won’t be doing much working out this weekend. However, pretty sure we will get in some bonus cardio with walking around the city, a run by the lake one morning, and lots and lots of party rockin’ and shufflin’.

Hints?

(Okay, not the trickiest “hints”. So you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to click on the pictures and see their names that I was way too lazy to change ;) Orrr you could just click on the link below.)

Somehow I have never made it there before, despite being the home to one of my best friends for a few years now.

We also have this on the agenda!

I wanted beer…..and now I’m gonna get it. Look at that brewery list!!!!!

I am also really excited to check out lots of restaurants and places unique to the city.

Here’s to hoping this coming weekend is just like this:

(Monday night….gorg)

Looks like we will have nice (albeit a lil’ chilly) weather this weekend….yet I have a feeling this is gonna be one of those little getaways where I need a vacation after the vacation. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. :)

Sidebar: I planned on getting together a post about my fave core workouts this week, but due to my lack of consistent work in the gym and studio this week, I am going to save it for later. Look for that, Christmas cards, new drawings, travel and holiday recaps, a giveaway, and some other fun things spread out over the next few weeks.

Total Wine = Heaven

Hey there!

Here is a look at my past week in a big ‘ol recap post:

Southwestern Quinoa, via Eating Bird Food…I only swapped a few things. I used cilantro instead of parsley, added in some garlic because I am addicted, and a few slices of avocado on top. LOVED this.

Woke up to an awful lot of fog last week. And cold. Blech.

Koda trying out Oscar’s backpack. Ready for school!

My new favorite smoothie after lifting. This is so different than my typical strawberry/banana/peanut butter smoothies. Dark Chocolate Almond Milk (amazing), half a frozen banana, big handful of frozen blueberries, vanilla SunWarrior protein, spinach, and cold water to thin it out. Much appreciated after my two hours of BodyCombat and BodyPump Saturday morning.

Artichoke ‘za on whole-wheat naan…great to make for a quick lunch. Heavy on the crushed red pepper, as per usual.

I have been a drawing machine. Here’s a little preview! Plus, I am one drawing down for my Christmas cards….two to go, and all three to color, preferably before my trip to Boston this weekend. Yeesh.

Kitty Puss (that’s what we call my sister’s cat, thanks to my family’s, and my best friend’s fiance’s, obsession with Cookie Puss. Thanks a lot, Pat) loves new adventures in the garage due to all my stuff that I finally got out of Tucson.

The Cookie Puss birthday tradition.

The man, the myth, the legend. Cookie Puss.

BIG thank you to my good friends Joe and Kristin and Sarah for keeping all of my crap for so long! And for Dave, Joe, and the girls helping me pack it all up while I had numerous breakdowns. I owe you big time. Joe and his family, who were hoarding the bulk of my stuff for me while I tried to figure out my crazy life, had moved my stuff upstairs (they were keeping it all in a few rooms in their finished basement) and ready to be put into the truck by the time my dad arrived. With an assembly line consisting of my friend, his brother, my dad, and my dad’s good friend who flew out just to be able to share drive time back, they loaded up the truck in no time. You guys are seriously the best.

Oh, and I am super pumped to have this guy back…..if only I can find a place where it will fit, since it is five times the size of me.

My LoveSac (TWSS)….best extraneous investment I ever made.

Also got my wine aerator, decanter, and Houdini opener back amongst all my stuff…so after Coop and I went to see Paranormal Activity 3 (our first movie date, somehow, after over 8 months), we were obviously drawn to one of my favorite stores ever. Like two kids in a candy store.

Total Wine <3

We found his favorite wine, and while we anticipated putting together a make-your-own six pack, I am a terrible decision maker and wanted about 130 gazillion beers. We cut it down to twelve different ones and are working our way through them all, splitting them in half in two frosty mugs. Our own little taste-testing, if you will. Best stay-in date ever.

This is what heaven looks like.

So far, this one is my fave. I do have a bit of a bias toward Flying Dog though…Ralph Steadman is one of my favorite artists. I even use some Flying Dog labels as bookmarks. Malty base, easy to drink, little nutty, little spicy, not too sweet….I’m in love. This one will be a winter regular for me.

I will definitely be posting a little review of each one…we wanted to take notes and see which ones are keepers. I love finding tasty new microbrews! Good thing the boy isn’t picky about beer, either. I guess with the last name “Bock,” I am destined to be a beer lover.

All in all, it was a crazy busy work week, topped off by a fantastic, relaxing weekend. In addition to our little taste-testing sesh, there was dinner at his fave Chinese buffet (one of the many gems of the state of Delaware. Also UDel and tax-free, what whaaat!), lots of show-watching (American Horror Story! So intriguing!), football-watching (Eagles and Ravens, womp womp. Get’chyo shit together. Thank goodness the Patriots won and the game was exciting at least), a gingerbread latte from Dunkin’ (it’s baaaack!), spending time with the pup and family, and some healthified mac’n’cheese that I made similarly to my buffalo mac’n’cheese. Just omitted the buffalo sauce and used some shredded chicken breasts that had been marinated in verde sauce.

Breadcrumby goodness.

It was a perfect weekend.

Excuse my phone pictures…I am so in the market for a good, new camera.

Have a great week!
xoxoxo

Send prayers out to my dad if you can, he’s going through some tough things this week and I wish him the best…he is the most selfless, loving, caring, wonderful person I know, next to my mama, and he deserves the world. Love you, Daddy!
